April 7, 1934 – March 11, 2017

A Mass of the celebration of life for Bert Winter will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Seven Dolors Church in Albany, MN.  An informal gathering of telling stories like he loved to do will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass.  After a brief illness, Bert died at the St. Cloud hospital on Saturday, March 11, 2017 surrounded by his wife, Joyce and his family. Bert chose to have his body donated to the Anatomy Program at the University of Minnesota Medical School. A private inurnment will be held at later day.  Bert was born on April 7, 1934 to Edward and Rose (Obermiller) Winter in Albany, MN.  He attended Albany High School until he was 16 when he went to work to help his parents.  He worked for Patterson Construction, the City of Albany in the maintenance department and the police department, Forest Lake Contracting, and Progressive Contractors, Inc. Along with his wife, owned Bert’s Booze Barn in Albany. He was also a former member of the Albany Fire Department and the Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons Union. He was a member of the Seven Dolors Parish in Albany.  His first wife (Cecilia “Birdie” Perne) preceded him in death in 1980.  On May 30, 1981, he married Joyce Sand in Buffalo, MN.  

Bert liked to fish, ice fishing/spearing, traveling by car to many states, spending time at Pine Lake watching his grandkids fish and mowing lawn there, snow removal with his Gator, driving his scooters, bird watching, taking his daily drives around the City of Albany and spending time with his family.  He was a very hard working man with a great sense of humor. Bert was an ingenious man who could figure out anything.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce of 35 years.  His children, Bruce (Marsha) Winter, Brent (friend, Rhonda) Winter, Brenna (John) Linn, Berleen (Jason) Hollenkamp, and Patrick (Nancy) Stuart.  His grandchildren, Chris, Michael, Bruce Jr. (friend, Erin) and Tiffany Winter, Ashley Scharboneau (friend,Brent) , Dylan (friend, Marci) Winter,  Neil (Mandy),  Jessica (friend, Hassan),  Melany and Trista Linn, Taryn and Krissy Hollenkamp, and Samantha and Rachel Stuart.  Also 3 great grandkids, Abel and Abigail Linn and Quincy Linn.  He is survived by his brother, George (Diane) Winter.

He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Betty Sand.  His brother-in-law’s, Jim (Jean), Dennis (Joan), Dale (Mary), Leo (Karen), Tom (Ginger), and Brian (Sherri) Sand.  His sister-in-law, Judy (Eldred) Dingmann. He is also survived by his kitty, Sassy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Rose, his first wife, Birdie, his brother E. J. Winters and his sister, Mary Alma Verbeke.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be used at the family’s preference.
