“The girls played hard last night. We had some close matches that kept going back and forth. The girls knew this was a big match and gave it their all,” said coach Sara Englemeyer after the girls lost 7-0 to the Streeters during their first day of team sections on Oct. 5. The Dutchmen did not advance to the second day of team sections which was held on Oct. 10 at Fitness Evolution in Sartell.

First singles player McKayla Schleper lost to her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Allie Toenies underwent a lengthy match versus Maria Jennissen of Sauk Centre at two singles. Toenies lost 6-3 in the first set, came back and won 6-3 in the second set and then lost the third set 6-1.

Sophomore Paige Danzl took on Emily Primus at third singles and lost 6-0, 6-1.

Jessie Danzl was neck-in-neck with Savanna Marthaler in both sets, but ended up losing the match 6-4, 6-4.

“I think the girls hit the ball very well. They started to move their opponent back and forth,” Englemeyer said. “Our serves were also working pretty good for us. We struggled to close games out though.”

In the one doubles match teammates Haiden Rausch and Hanna Wiechmann started their first set slow and lost 6-1 but then picked it up in the second set where they lost 7-6 (7-2).

Tasha Sopkowiak and Maia Reuter had to forfeit their match at two doubles, so Sauk Centre automatically took the win.

At three doubles, Kirsten Dragseth and Erika Hoppe lost their match 6-1, 6-2.

The girls will take the courts on Thursday to kick off individual section play.

“Individuals should be exciting. It is fun to watch the individuals play different people they haven’t met during the season,” Englemeyer said. “This week we will continue to just practice the basics and remember to take one point at a time. At this point, the girls need to hit the ball as much as they can. We will continue to focus on getting our first serves in.”
