The remarkable playoff run the Albany Girls Basketball Team has been on took another step forward Wednesday night at the University of Minnesota’s Maturi Pavilion.
The Huskies defeated Holy Family Catholic 60-49 to advance to the Minnesota State High School League Girls Basketball Class AA State Semifinals.
In their win over HFC, the Huskies' resiliency and defense was key.
They trailed 20-14 in the first half only to rally to tie the game at 23. A last second 3-point shot by HFC right before half put the Huskies at a 26-23 deficit.
Albany took over the game in the start of the second half.
Rachael Neu and Paige Meyer each scored six points and Hannah Litchy added four in a 16-5 run that gave the Huskies a 39-31 advantage.
HFC trimmed the lead to two several times in the last six minutes, but Albany’s tough 2-3 zone defense and free-throw shooting helped the Huskies preserve the lead. Guards Amanda Kollodge and Meyer combined to sink 11-12 free-throws in the last 1:30 to put away the win.
Meyer was outstanding throughout the game. She often penetrated and got to the baskets, and in other instances she stepped back and burried a 3-pointer. She finished 4-6 on three’s and scored 32 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Kollodge scored 15 points and was 10-12 from the line.
The Huskies stingy defense held HFC to 17-56 shooting (30 percent).
Albany shot 17-34 (50 percent) from the field and out-rebounded HFC 43-23.
Albany will play Minnehaha Academy at 8 p.m. Friday night at the University of Minnesota’s Williams Arena. Roseau will play Caledonia in the other state semifinal game.
