SC-M wrestlers’ win streak halted

Sauk Centre-Melrose wrestlers’ win streak ended Feb. 26 at the Sauk Centre Triangular.

“We were on a six-meet win streak. That might have been the longest we’ve had as Sauk Centre-Melrose,” head coach Vaughn Glasener said. 

SC-M lost 36-33 to Ogilvie and 42-39 to Fergus Falls. In both matches, the lighter weights did well. Noah Christen, Lanna Walter, Mitchell Christen and Jose de los Santos were all unbeaten. 

“Our lighter weights are really wrestling well from 138 down,” Glasener said. “They are young and getting better. You can’t ask for much more.”

Against Ogilvie, the memorable match of the night was the 4-1 win for de los Santos. The match was scoreless until the third period. In the final 10 seconds, de los Santos had a takedown to go ahead.

“I just kept chasing him and got him tired,” de los Santos said.

His lateral drop takedown worked to perfection as his opponent was on his back. Time ran out before a pin could be recorded.

Momentum switched after the 145-pound match. Ogilvie won five of the next seven weights, sealing the match at 220 with a pin. Will Sjogren finished the match with a SC-M win scoring a second-period pin.
