Sauk Rapids-Rice defeated the Melrose-Sauk Centre Fusion boys swimming and diving team 101-79 Dec. 9 at Melrose Area High School in Melrose.

“We knew they (SRR) were going to win a lot of events, but we were pretty pleased with where some of these guys came in,” said James Schreiner, co-head coach of the Fusion. “We had a lot of personal bests.”

The 200-yard medley relay of Adam Wilwerding, Sevrin Anderson, Jacob Robischon and Grant Eveslage showed the Fusion has quality swimmers. They won the race by over one second. The relay was one of three races won by Melrose-Sauk Centre.

“We had a lot good swims in a lot of good spots,” Schreiner said. “It was a great way to come out.”

The Fusion won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Adam Wilwerding took first and Alex Wilwerding third in both.

The best finish of the night came in the 100 butterfly where Robischon swam against the Storm’s Noah Blodgett.  Blodgett seemed to have the race won when the final lap began, but Robischon did not concede. He kept closing in on Blodgett and missed first place by .19 seconds.

“Jacob had a great race,” Schreiner said. “He and Andrew are great leaders.”

The diving featured two of the better divers in the area. Andrue Stalboerger was edged 193.8 points to 188.9 by SRR’s Hayden Zabinski.

“You will not see too many divers better than that or matches where two guys just battle it out,” Schreiner said.

The impressive swim was in the 500FSR. The Storm’s Cash Walz had a record-setting 500 freestyle relay, swimming the event in 4 minutes, 52 seconds. He lapped every swimmer in the race.
