Albany Area closes season with 10-0 win over Huskers
Playoffs begin this week
The Albany Huskies finished their regular season with a 10-0 win May 26 over the Holdingford Huskers.
Albany and Holdingford were scheduled to start the Section 6AA playoffs May 30, but due to wet weather the entire day’s slate of games was postponed until May 31 with the second round Wednesday, June 1.
Albany 10, Holdingford 0
After two scoreless innings, the Huskies broke the game open and scored 10 in the next three to defeat the Huskers 10-0 May 26 at Holdingford High School in Holdingford in a regular season finish for both teams.
The Huskies scored two in the third as Isaac Evenson, who came in to run for pitcher Caden Sand who walked, and Brandon Holm crossed the plate.
The Huskies followed that with two four-run innings. In the fourth, Peyton Krumrei (single), Sand (triple), Holm (double) and Brady Goebel (double) got on base and scored, with Evenson running for Sand. In the fifth Evenson (double), Krumrei (hit by pitch), Sand (hit by pitch) and Holm (walk) scored.
Sand got the win, going four innings and giving up just two hits. He struck out seven and walked two. Carter Birr pitched one inning and struck out two while giving up no hits and no walks.
Logan Harren was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Goebel was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Holm went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Tanner Reis, Devin Hansen, Krumrei, Sand and Evenson each got a hit with Evenson a double and Sand a triple.
For the Huskers Cohl Clear got a double.
The Huskies finished the regular season 15-5.
Holdingford finished the regular season 3-17.
“Good finish with those two games,” said Albany Coach Al Amdahl on the season final wins against Holdingford and Annandale.
Albany 9, Annandale 2
Sand had the hot bat in the Huskies’ win over the Annandale Cardinals May 24 at Blattner Field in Avon.
Sand belted out three home runs (3-4), scored four and had four RBIs. Those home runs came in the first, third and fifth innings.
Blake Winkels was the winning pitcher. He went 4 2/3 innings and gave up five hits and two earned runs while striking out two and walking four. Holm pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up two hits.
Birr was 2-3 for three with two RBIs. Goebel, Reis and Harren got a hit each.
Upsala 6, Holdingford 0
The Huskers lost to the host Upsala Cardinals 6-0 May 24 at Upsala High School in Upsala.
Drew Lange, Sam Harren and Jaden Bartkowicz got a hit each for the Huskers.
Upsala scored three in the first, one in the third and two in the fourth.
