Athletes compete in Sauk Centre, Holdingford
The Melrose Area track and field teams split its squad for two meets last week.
Some athletes competed in the Sauk Centre Invitational April 27 at Sauk Centre High School in Sauk Centre; others in the Blascziek Invitational April 25 at Holdingford High School in Holdingford.
Wet weather canceled all jumping, hurdling and vaulting events in Sauk Centre. Only throwing and running events were held.
The best finish of the day was Isabelle Jaenicke’s second in the 200-meter dash. She finished at 27.7 seconds, .3 of a second behind the champion.
Will Sjogren took third in the shot put and fourth in the discus. His 39-foot, 2-inch put missed second by five inches.
The boys finished with 20 points and the girls with 11 points, both good for sixth place. Minnewaska Area scored 137.5 to win the girls meet. Sauk Centre’s 158 gave it the boys crown.

Blascziek Invitational
Alyssa Stordahl finished first in the 400 in Holdingford. The 1:06.30 finish was her season best.
Stordahl teamed up with Kayla Meyer, Maria Hinnenkamp and Bridgette Hingeveld to win the 4x800 relay. In the 1600, it was Hinnenkamp, third; Hingeveld, sixth; and Meyer, ninth place. Natalie Enright claimed fourth and Nyayul Ruey snagged eighth in the shot put.
The team finished with 31 points, taking seventh. Holdingford won the meet with 137.5 points.
The Dutchmen earned 54 points, taking seventh place. Holdingford, 144.66, took first place.
Freddy Raya Garcia, Brady Kuhlmann and David Raya Garcia were top-10 finishers in the 200 and 400 dashes. With Damien Ramirez, they took second place in the 4x200.
Logan Rue was second in the 1600, with Austin Kelzer in ninth and Timothy Wilwerding earning 11th place. In the 4x800 relay, Austin Kelzer, Wilwerding, Rue and Anthony Martinez Montanez took second and the grouping of Sawyer Frieler, Malachi Piche, Brandon Hingeveld and Derick Rademacher were fifth.
Sjogren had the best finishes in the field, taking second in shot put and fifth in discus.
