Joan S. Young

Joan S. Young, 94, of Tucson, Arizona, and formerly of Sauk Centre and Pine River, passed away Aug. 25, 2023, at Haven Health of Green Valley, Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Pastor Mike Carlson officiating. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 22, at the funeral home in Sauk Centre.

Joan Simmens was born July 4, 1929, in Widnes, England, to Norman and Frances (Smith) Simmens. She married Charles Young Sept. 14, 1946, in Backus. She worked for The Good Samaritan Home in Pine River for 10 years. The couple then moved to Sauk Centre where she worked at St. Michael’s Hospital, now known as CentraCare-Sauk Centre Hospital, as a nurse’s aide and also worked in the therapy clinic. She retired at the age of 72 and moved to Tucson, Arizona, in 2015.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre as well as the church auxiliary.

Joan always enjoyed being the caregiver. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially cooking for them.

She is survived by her children Christine (Bill) Young of Tucson, Arizona, and Darrell (Pat) Young of Bigfork, Montana; daughters-in-law Gloria Young of Sauk Centre, Leiloni Young of Holdingford and Nancy Young of Belgrade; sister Marion Heavirland of Grand Rapids; brothers Donald (Nancy) Young of Ramsey and Anthony Young of Grand Rapids; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband Charles on Dec. 27, 1983; parents; stepfather; sons Duane, Michael and Neil Young; brothers Norman, George and Keith Simmens; sister Jessie Grady; and one great-grandson Austin Young.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.
